Biography

Lieutenant General/Ambassador Vernon A. Walters was commissioned an Infantry Officer upon graduation from Officer Candidate School 29 May 1942. AMB Walters had a long and highly successful military career and a significant public service career at the highest level of the National Government. He was a veteran of World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War. Military Highlights include Aide to Mark W. Clark, Commanding General of the Fifth Army; Aide to General of the Army George Marshall; Assistant Military Attache-at-large to Ambassador Averell Harriman, and Staff Assistant to the President of the United States Dwight Eisenhower and Vice President Richard Nixon; Public Service Highlights include United States Ambassador to the United Nations, United States Ambassador to the Republic of Germany, and Deputy Director Central Intelligence Agency. His Highest Awards and Honors include the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star, Air Medal and the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame.
