After his World War II service, Gordon Gray embarked on an amazing and diverse career at the highest levels of government and education. Having served in the North Carolina General Assembly before and after the war, he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Army in 1947 and Secretary in 1949. He would leave government service in late 1950 to become the President of the University of North Carolina System. He returned to government service in 1955 and became the National Security Advisor to President Eisenhower from 1958-1961, for which he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
