Biography

Commissioned in 1953, General James Lindsay commanded Infantry and special operations units at all levels. A distinguished paratrooper, he held eight assignments in the 82nd Airborne Division from platoon leader to Division Commander. During multiple tours in Vietnam, he served notably as an advisor to the Vietnamese Airborne Brigade and commander, 2nd Battalion 60th Infantry. He later commanded the U.S. Army Infantry School, the XVIII Airborne Corps, and ultimately served as the first commander, U.S. Special Operations Command. His awards include the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star w/ three Oak Leaf Clusters and Master Parachutist Badge with two combat stars. General Lindsay is a member of the Ranger Hall of Fame and the 1996 recipient of the Infantry’s Doughboy Award.
